How to create value

Cookies

A cookie is a small file a website stores on your device. Some sites use

dozens. This one uses as few as it can.

What we store without asking

Your cookie choice. When you answer the question at the bottom of the

screen, we remember the answer on your device so we do not ask again. This

is not a cookie: it is stored in your browser and never sent to us. We are

allowed to store it without asking, because remembering your own preference

is the only thing it does.

Nothing else is stored unless you agree to it.

What we store if you agree

Google Analytics. If you say yes, Google Analytics sets cookies that

count visits and tell us which episodes people read. It tells us things

like how many people came, which pages they looked at and roughly where in

the world they were. It does not tell us who you are.

Google Analytics cookies usually last up to two years. The data goes to

Google, who also use it for their own purposes, which is why we have to ask

first rather than assume.

If you say no, none of it loads. No cookie is set and no request is made to

Google at all. The site works exactly the same either way.

Changing your mind

Use the Cookie choices link at the bottom of any page. It clears your

answer and asks again, so you can switch either way whenever you like.

You can also delete cookies in your browser settings, and set your browser

to refuse them.

What we do not do

We do not use cookies for advertising. We do not track you across other

websites. We do not sell anything about you to anyone.

The audio

Playing an episode fetches the audio from Captivate, who host it. Captivate

log the request to count listens, which is how every podcast counts its

audience, and it happens whether you listen here or in any podcast app. We

see those figures as totals, not as individual people.

Episode videos come from YouTube on its privacy-enhanced domain, and only

once you press play. Until then YouTube is not contacted.

to ask for a copy of yours.
